The owners of a historic home in downtown Hudson loved the second-story deck that overlooked their backyard, but a heavy, outdated railing obscured the view and made the space feel cramped and closed in. With a thoughtfully designed remodel, Finley & Sons gave the deck a modern update without sacrificing its original character.
To maintain the early 20th-century detailing of the home, aluminum railings and balusters that replicate the classic look of wrought iron were chosen for their low-maintenance durability. The updated railing system opened up sweeping views of the backyard and created a safer, more spacious-feeling deck that honors the home’s architectural heritage. Worn wooden deck boards were replaced with easy-care Trex decking to improve durability and reduce maintenance, making the space as functional as it is beautiful. To enhance privacy while keeping the design cohesive, aluminum screen panels were installed as a clean, contemporary take on a traditional lattice.
Now, the homeowners have a welcoming outdoor space where they can relax with a cup of coffee, gather with friends, or simply enjoy a quiet evening outside during Ohio’s long, sunny summer days. It’s the perfect balance of old and new—crafted to blend seamlessly with the existing structure and the surrounding historic district.
